Caring for DIY tape-in hair extensions — Muse For Hair

How to Care for DIY Tape-In Hair Extensions

Table of Contents

Looking after DIY tape-ins is mostly normal hair care with a few bond-safe habits. Get those right and the same Remy wefts are built to last up to 9 months with proper care across many 2–4 week wear cycles — not nine months on one strip of tape.

This guide covers the first 48 hours, washing, sleeping, swimming, heat, and products. For install and move-up steps, use the written apply and re-tape guides (or the video install page).

    The first 48 hours

After a fresh install or re-tape:

    • Wait 48 hours before any contact with water — including shower steam and sweaty workouts.
    • Skip oils, serums, and leave-ins near the bonds.
    • Sleep in a loose plait or low pony so the wefts are not pulled or flipped overnight.

The adhesive needs that window to settle. Rushing a wash is one of the fastest ways to get early slip.

    How to wash DIY tape-ins

Once you are past 48 hours, wash like normal with extension-safe products:

    1. 1. Use a gentle, extension-safe shampoo (sulphate-free is a safe default). Work it through your own hair and the lengths — you do not need a special “tape-only” ritual every wash.
    2. 2. Keep conditioner away from the tapes. Condition mid-lengths to ends only. Conditioner and oils on the adhesive are a common reason bonds loosen early.
    3. 3. Rinse thoroughly.
    4. 4. Dry the bonds. Pat the tape area carefully and make sure the roots/bonds are fully dry before you sleep or put hair up. Damp bonds sit soft longer than dry ones.

You do not need to wash every day. Wash when your hair needs it — same as without extensions — as long as the tapes stay clean and dry between washes.

    Sleep and day-to-day

    • Night: loose plait or low pony. A silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction if you have one; it is helpful, not mandatory.
    • Brush gently from ends upward. Support the weft with your other hand if a tangle sits near a bond — no yanking through the tape line.
    • Avoid tight high ponytails that lever against the front wefts all day.

    Swimming, sweat and salt

    • After the first 48 hours you can swim, but rinse with clean water soon after chlorine or saltwater.
    • Do not coat the bonds in oil or leave-in before you swim as “protection” — oils on tape work against hold.
    • After sweaty workouts, let the root area dry; do not sleep on soaking-wet bonds.

    Heat styling

    • Always use a heat protectant on the hair lengths.
    • Style below the bonds. Do not clamp straighteners or wands directly onto the tape.
    • Blow-dry on a moderate setting; finish until the tape area is dry.

Human Remy hair can take heat like your own — the adhesive cannot.

Products to prefer (and skip near the tapes)

Prefer: extension-safe shampoo and a light conditioner or mask used only on lengths. Muse customers often use Muk Hair Extension Shampoo and Muk 1-Minute Leave-In Mask on the lengths — whatever you choose, keep heavy product off the adhesive.

Keep off the tapes: oils, silicone-heavy serums at the root, alcohol-heavy sprays blasted at the bonds, and anything oily enough to break adhesive down.

On the apply guide we also flag protein-heavy treatments such as K18 and Color Wow as products that can affect hold for some wearers — if you use them, keep them away from the tape line and watch your next wear cycle.

If a single weft slips early, it is usually prep (residue or damp hair) or product on the bond — fix that weft with fresh tape rather than ignoring it. See how to re-tape.

    FAQ

How soon can I wash after installing tape-ins?

Wait 48 hours before the first wash or any soaking sweat/steam.

Can I use conditioner with tape-in extensions?

Yes on the lengths and ends. Keep conditioner and masks away from the tapes.

How do I sleep with DIY tape-ins?

Loose plait or low pony. Optional silk/satin pillowcase. Avoid tight styles that pull the front wefts.

Can I swim with tape-in extensions?

After the first 48 hours, yes — rinse after chlorine or saltwater, and do not oil the bonds beforehand.

What products should I avoid on the bonds?

Oils, heavy silicones, and alcohol-heavy sprays on the tape line. Keep protein-heavy treatments off the adhesive if you use them.

How long will the hair last if I care for it properly?

With proper care, Muse DIY Remy wefts are reusable for up to 9 months across multiple 2–4 week wear cycles — not one continuous install on the same tape.

Where do I get remover and replacement tape?

Remover, Replacement Tape, or the Re-application Pack. Full remove steps: How to Remove DIY Tape-Ins. Product how-to: How to Use Hair Extension Remover.
